Cameron will work on two sequels to the 2009 blockbuster.
By Jocelyn Vena
If you want to go back to Pandora again and again, then today is your lucky day.
The projects are reportedly slated as Cameron's next projects. The tentatively titled "Avatar 2" is aiming for a December 2014 release and its follow-up "Avatar 3" for a December 2015 release. They will be produced by Cameron and his partner Jon Landau for Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment.
"In the second and third films, which will be self-contained stories that also fulfill a greater story arc, we will not back off the throttle of 'Avatar' 's visual and emotional horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters, which touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the world," Cameron said. "I'm looking forward to returning to Pandora, a world where our imaginations can run wild."
Cameron will begin work on scripts early next year and wants to begin production later in 2011. The decision on whether he will shoot the sequels back-to-back will be made when he finishes writing the films.
"It is a rare and remarkable opportunity when a filmmaker gets to build a fantasy world, and watch it grow, with the resources and partnership of a global media company," Cameron said. "With two new films on the drawing boards, my company and I are embarking on an epic journey with our partners at 20th Century Fox."
"Avatar" star Sigourney Weaver recently opened up to MTV News about what she'd like to see in the sequels, whether or not she makes it back. "I think that the challenges to Pandora will continue," she said. "I do think that humans will be back. I also think that maybe we'll get more of a chance to live a Na'vi life. I think we want to be in that world and I, for one, would love to be a Thanator in that world! I just think we have a big appetite for going back there, and I know that Jim will do everything he can to satisfy us and take it to even more parts of Pandora that we don't even know exist yet."
Check out everything we've got on "Avatar."

Eminem and Jay-Z perform at Yankee Stadium on Monday

NEW YORK — A year ago, Jay-Z showed why he's music's Emperor of the Empire State with a historic charity concert at Madison Square Garden, which Jay called "the house that Hovie built." On Monday night, "the God MC" took his mastery of performance to the front stoop of Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez, Yankee Stadium. And because that's no setting in which to go small, he brought out special guests like Kanye West, Drake, Chris Martin, Swizz Beatz, Nicki Minaj and, of course, Beyoncé.
After kicking off in Detroit two weeks ago, Jay and Eminem's Home and Home concerts landed on the Jiggaman's soil for shows on Monday and Tuesday (September 14). This time, after J. Cole opened, Slim Shady shook the stadium in the second slot, with special guests the G-Unit and Dr. Dre. Then Jay took over with a bevy of surprises and a catalog of hard-line hits.
"Before I start this piece, let me say, rest in peace to the boss, George [Steinbrenner]," Hov began, freestyling a reference to the late Yankees owner after commencing his program with the "Dynasty Intro."
"By the time we sliding home/ I hope we playing in the dome," he continued rapping.
During "Run This Town," Jay asked, "Where you at, boy?" And out came 2010 VMA closer Kanye West in a red suit. The roar was thunderous for the Louis Vuitton Don, who also rocked a huge gold link chain.
They followed up with the first live performance of the "Power" remix — where all 50,000-plus people did the soulful "power clap" — and "Monster." There was no Rick Ross on the latter, but 'Ye and Hov brought out Nicki Minaj, who was showered with love from her hometown.
Hov said that since they were in New York, he couldn't let Kanye off the hook that easy. West told the audience he was going to "take them back." The Chicago-born icon then crushed the concert with "Can't Tell Me Nothing" and a follow-up haymaker of the stadium-friendly "Good Life."
"It's one of the most unbelievable feelings in the world, being from New York and being in Yankee stadium," Jay said about the night.
"That's how you feel, New York City?" Hov continued, in response to the crowd's overwhelming cheers. "New York City, is that how you feel tonight? I can't believe this sh--!"
Jay's next guest was Bronx native Swizz Beatz, who was also celebrating his birthday. What a present!
Further along in his set list, Jay rolled out his jaw-dropping verse from "Free Mason." Like in most of his shows, the Jiggaman constantly spoke to the crowd. "Just because you question religion doesn't mean you don't believe in God," he said after his rumor-admonishing verse. "Don't let anybody scare you into having their beliefs. Be a muthaf---in' renegade."
Out came Eminem for their classic colossal meeting of the minds. No matter how many times they perform "Renegade," it's still surreal to see the two biggest names in rap stand unified, side by side.
Memphis Bleek then came out for a parade of familiar Jay knockers, including "U Don't Know," "99 Problems" and "Big Pimpin'."
There was a tribute to hip-hop's gone-but-not-forgotten greats that included B.I.G., D12's Proof, Pimp C and Tupac Shakur. Monday was the 14th anniversary of Pac's tragic death.
Chris Martin from Coldplay came out to sing the hook on "Heart of the City." Martin was crisp and soulful on the mic. Jay kicked the graceful lines to "Most Kingz," and then Martin took the energy up a few levels with "Viva la Vida."
"I used to rule the world," the crowd sang. "Seas would rise/ When I gave the word/ Now in the morning I sleep alone/ Sweep the streets I used to own/ I used to roll the dice/ Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes."
Hov then told his DJ to throw on any song, and out came Drake for "Miss Me."
"Tellllllll me/ What's really going / Drizzy back up in this bitch/ What's happenin!!!" Drake came on rapping. The approval for the 23-year-old was vibrant.
"Say, 'Free Weezy!' " Drake commanded during Lil Wayne's verse. Jay and Drizzy then let the mics explode with "Light Up."
Not letting the audience catch their breath, Beyoncé came out for "Forever Young."
"One word, Beyoncé, make some noise," Jay said about his wife. "That girl baaad! That girl tough!"
After "Already Home" came "Empire State of Mind." No Alicia Keys, but Roc Nation artist Bridget Kelly was on her A-game with the vocals. Not that it mattered, because the NYC crowd drowned the song out.
"This is better than any Grammy. Better than any MTV award," Jay said about being able to rock his city.
He then went into overtime with a barrage of classics such as "Jigga My N---a" and "Izzo."
He told the fans he wasn't going anywhere and continued to keep the energy high with "Where I'm From" and "Dirt Off Your Shoulder." Most of the sold-out crowd stayed until the very end, which featured Jay doing the Linkin Park mash-up version of "Encore."
"This night was like a gift for me," said the man who seemingly has everything. "I hope I returned it tenfold."

On Tuesday, we told you that Mel Gibson would be appearing in the sequel to the 2009 comedy sensation The Hangover. We questioned whether the world was ready to laugh at Gibson, with the memory of his girlfriend-killing threats and racist insults still fresh in our minds. Turns out that a few people involved with the movie didn't think the idea was so funny, either. On Thursday, Hangover 2 director Todd Phillips announced that Gibson's cameo had been cancelled.
"I thought Mel would have been great in the movie," Phillips said. "But I realize filmmaking is a collaborative effort, and this decision ultimately did not have the full support of my entire cast and crew."
According to Phillips, the studio supported the decision to cast Gibson. So who convinced him to can the controversial actor? Fans are speculating that it was The Hangover's breakout star, Zach Galifianakis, who objected. The actor and comedian appeared on a popular comedy podcast last week, and spoke in veiled terms about an issue he was having with (presumably) the Hangover 2 filmmakers.
"I'm in a deep protest right now with a movie I'm working on, up in arms about something," said Galifianakis, after explaining that he sometimes turns down roles on moral grounds. "But I can't get the guys to [listen] ... I'm not making any leeway... It's very frustrating."
Galifianakis may have been talking about something else entirely; we imagine that The Hangover 2 has its fair share of questionable humor. However, if he did object to using Gibson as a punchline, it sounds like he wasn't the only one. Wonder how many cast and crew members voiced their concerns before Gibson was canned?
Gibson's rejection from The Hangover 2 brings back the question of whether he can ever have a Hollywood career again. One film is hanging in the balance: Jodie Foster's provocative comedy The Beaver, starring Gibson as a businessman who has a nervous breakdown and starts talking through a puppet. The movie was shot in 2009, but its release date was postponed indefinitely when its star became the most hated man in show business. It's one thing if no one will work with Gibson on a new film -- but is he such a pariah that no one will touch a movie that he already made?
Do you think Mel Gibson's last movie should be released? Chime in below!

Actor Randy Quaid and his insane wife Evi are definitely living in their own world, but it's an entertaining one for us to catch a glimpse of from time to time.
Wanted by authorities in California, the fugitives were arrested Friday in Vancouver. They want to stay in Canada as refugees. Truth is stranger than fiction.
Randy and Evi Quaid say they are being persecuted south of the border.
REFUGEES: That's what the Quaids aspire to be now.
Evi Quaid pleaded for a Canadian immigration adjudicator not to return them to the U.S. She said her husband's friends, such as David Carradine and Heath Ledger, have died under suspicious circumstances and worries Randy will be next.
We are not making this up.
"We feel our lives are in danger," she said, complaining of high blood pressure and adding that Randy Quaid's mother is in hospital due to stress over all this.
Monday, California officials issued arrest warrants for Randy, 60, and Evi, 47, after they failed to appear in court for allegedly squatting in a home illegally.
The Quaids previous owned the house in Montecito, Calif. Both face felony vandalism charges for breaking into and living in the property's guest house.
Local authorities said the couple caused more than $5,000 in damage, including smashing a $7,000 mirror. Then they failed to show in court, of course.
This nonsense followed an unrelated, but similarly absurd case last year in which the Quaids stayed in a California B&B and skipped out without paying (then were no-shows in court and had to be hunted down by authorities as well).
Celebrity bounty hunter Duane Chapman (Dog the Bounty Hunter) issued a public challenge to the couple Thursday, urging them to turn themselves in.
Otherwise, he's comin' after them himself!
"At least do it for your wife and for how you were raised. If not, well, the Chapman family is coming after you," the bounty hunter said on Lopez Tonight.
How much would you pay to see that on TV?!

Kanye West is at it again. But sadly it is not singing. While speaking to Access Hollywood about his new short film, Runaway, the outspoken rapper once again let his mouth run away when it came to the topic of next year’s Grammy nominations. Check out his response in the interview clip below.
West still wants to discuss last year, where he was criticized for interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video. He asked, "Why are the last four Albums of the Year: Taylor Swift, Dixie Chicks, Ray Charles and Herbie Hancock? Like, you know, with all due respect… that’s inaccurate. How about albums that sold 10 million?"
West might have his own album, My Beautiful Twisted Reality, in mind which is set to be released November 22. But really, this isn’t about him. "I don’t really care about me. It’s about everybody. It’s about artists. It’s about fair ground. If Drake is having an awesome year and his year is better than mine, I’m not gonna say I should win. I’m gonna say Drake should win."
If nothing else the rapper is sure to have a busy year. On top of his first new album in three years, the 35-minute short he directed starring Victoria’s Secret model Selita Ebanks and named after one of his new songs will air on MTV tomorrow night at 8pm EST. Ironically the same network where he placed partial blame. "I pinpoint the Grammys and the VMAs because they have to take responsibility, because they mean something to us," he said. "Little kids, 6-years [old], that are singing in front of the mirror. They’re also thinking about their Grammy speech."
But the question is, is West thinking about interrupting their acceptance speech too?
Do you take Kanye's feelings about award winners seriously or is this just another rant? Chime in below!

Halle Berry, Kelly Clarkson, Justin Timberlake and more have had their moments.

Despite the triumphant TV returns of Kanye West, T.I. and El DeBarge at Sunday night's 2010 BET Awards, the big headline from the show was Chris Brown's moving tribute to late superstar Michael Jackson. Brown flawlessly executed all of Jackson's most classic dance moves (including a scorching moonwalk), but when it came time to lend his voice to Jackson's "Man in the Mirror," Brown broke down in tears and could not sing, apparently overwhelmed by the emotion of the situation.
Crying in public is hardly a new phenomenon in the world of popular culture. Brown joins the list of some of the biggest stars in the world who have also broken down on television.
Halle Berry When Berry won the Oscar for Best Actress at the 74th Annual Academy Awards in 2002 (for her work in "Monster's Ball"), she became the first African-American woman to take home the prize. That, combined with the overwhelming experience that was making the emotionally-charged "Monster's Ball" and the huge standing ovation she received, threw Berry into hysterics during her acceptance speech. "This moment is so much bigger than me," she said.
Kelly Clarkson When Kelly Clarkson won the very first season of "American Idol," she was initially in a state of shock. Unable to express how she was feeling to the television audience who voted her the victor over Justin Guarini, she moved on to her performance of "A Moment Like This." When she hit the lyric, "I can't believe it's happening to me," she finally broke. She managed to get through the song, but to continuously apologized for her emotion.
Justin Timberlake Ashton Kutcher's hit MTV show "Punked" certainly pushed a lot of his famous friends to the brink, but few had a reaction like Timberlake. When Kutcher's crew of actors pretended to be federal officers seizing most of his possessions for failure to pay back taxes, Timberlake flipped out and wept. Usually, Kutcher's reveal at the end of the episode throws the celebrity in question into laughing jags or fits of anger, but Timberlake was clearly just filled with relief.
Tonya Harding Athletes cry all the time, but it's usually because of the overwhelming thrill of victory or the agony of bitter defeat. Rarely do they weep during a particular competition, but that's exactly what Harding did at the 1994 Winter Olympics. After dealing with her connection to the attack on fellow skater Nancy Kerrigan in the run-up to the games, Harding took the ice only to realize that a lace on one of her skates had broken. In between sobs, she pleaded with the judges to allow her to get new laces and start over. They allowed it, though Harding still only finished eighth.
Crystal Bowersox The season nine "American Idol" runner-up had an extremely emotional run to the finals (including a harrowing health scare), but it took merely the presence of her father and a particularly heartfelt song to push her to tears. Bowersox slipped a handful of sobs into her performance of Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions' "People Get Ready" during Inspirational Week on the show. It was one of the many performances that put Bowersox in the discussion of the best "Idol" contestants of all time.
Tracy Morgan The always unpredictable star of "Saturday Night Live" and "30 Rock" has had a tough life and a challenging career, but the mere mention of co-star Tina Fey sent Morgan on the crying train when he visited with Oprah Winfrey on an episode of her show back in April. "She's my friend. Tina is my friend. I love her," he told Winfrey as he was fighting back tears.
"Crying Girl" There are an awful lot of "American Idol" moments on this list, aren't there? Ashley Ferl gained notoriety during the show's sixth season not as a contestant but as a particularly emotional audience member. The 13-year-old Ferl was so taken with "Idol" contestant Sanjaya Malakar's take on the Kinks' "You Really Got Me" that she sobbed uncontrollably, earning herself a great deal of screen time and the privilege of becoming an Internet meme for a while.
Did we miss any? What is the best incident of celebrity crying? And what did you think of Brown's performance? Let us know in the comments!

After an incident at a laser tag center in Canada over the weekend, Justin Bieber is reportedly ready to stand up against bullies. On Friday, a 12-year-old used an anti-gay slur against Bieber.
TMZ reports that the 16-year-old star plans to take a stand against homophobia after realizing how hurtful it can be to be bullied, regardless of his own sexuality. Although Bieber is straight, he understands now what it is like to be on the receiving end, according to the website.
It's being reported that Bieber will likely go public about the incident sometime in the next week to lend his support to the anti-bullying campaign. Word is that Bieber's camp wanted to keep the episode quiet, but the singer thought it was more important to be open about it. Police are currently investigating, but after Bieber's camp spoke to police and witnesses backed up his story, it's been concluded that the singer did not instigate the confrontation with the tween.
While Bieber has yet to comment directly, on Monday (October 18) morning he tweeted this message to his fans: "Thanks for everyone supporting the book and the music. glad i get to share who i really am with u guys."
Unnamed sources have told TMZ that the episode went down at Planet Lazer, a laser tag chain that has a location in Richmond, British Columbia. The website reported that Bieber was targeted by an overzealous laser tag participant who lobbed an anti-gay slur at the teen idol. When the 12-year-old stuck his hand out toward Bieber, the pop sensation apparently batted it away and then left the center.
The incident comes during a busy time for the "Baby" crooner. The singer announced on Friday that his buzzed-about 3-D movie, out in February 2011, will be called "Never Say Never." His illustrated memoir, "Justin Bieber: First Step 2 Forever: My Story," just hit shelves. His chart-topping music continues to make an impact and the singer is up for four American Music Award trophies.

Fans of The Real Housewives of New York know Bethenny Frankel as the funny, outspoken single chef. But ever since getting her own show Bethenny Getting Married?, the reality TV star is more known for being a new wife and mother. "Being with my family is my highest priority," she told Parade magazine recently. "I don’t do anything if I can’t take my family with me," Frankel added, referring to her husband, Jason Hoppy, and her 5-month-old baby girl, Bryn.
But Frankel is far from not doing anything. The New York Times bestselling author will release her third book, The Place of Yes, next March, which she says is "about how I got to where I am, with the family, with everything." And her spinoff show is set to start filming its second season (which will air after the new year).
But this time her reality is less about wedding planning and more about wedding issues. "Everyone who is married knows that there are issues. We’ll be talking about what it’s really like to raise a baby, what it’s like to have in-laws, what it’s like to have religious differences. You know, the hot-trigger topics."
But what’s going to happen to the show’s name? "Now that Jason and I are married and have baby Bryn, we have to change the name of the show, of course. We haven’t chosen one yet, but we have a lot of good ideas." How about Bethenny: Married with a Baby?
What do you think Bethenny Frankel should call her show? Chime in below!

Friends and family of late Minneapolis underground rapper Michael "Eyedea" Larsen will gather in his hometown Thursday to honor the Rhymesayers MC, who died Saturday at home at the age of 28 of yet-undetermined causes.
A public wake for Larsen will take place from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Thursday in the Grand Ballroom at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in St. Paul, Minnesota, with the family asking that any flowers be set to arrive on the day of the event, care of the hotel. Those wishing to make donations for the funeral can visit a PayPal site set up by Larsen's mother, Kathy Averill.
A week later, fans and fellow rappers will gather for a celebration honoring Larsen at Minneapolis' famed First Avenue club, slated to take place November 9. The show begins at 5 p.m. and is open to all ages with a $20 suggested donation; tickets will go on sale Monday, with a limited amount available to out-of-town fans through Etix.com.
There will also be a radio tribute Saturday from 9 to 11 p.m. CT, available on 90.3 FM in Minneapolis, 106.7 FM in St. Paul, or online at Rhymesayers.com, Facebook.com/rseradio or KFAI.org. The show will feature Larsen's music and memories from friends. If you would like to participate, send stories or anecdotes to Twitter.com/rseradio, Facebook.com/rseradio or radio@rhymesayers.com.
Since his death, a number of tributes have poured in to the nimble MC known for his razor-sharp battle rap and freestyle skills and unpredictable storytelling gifts. One of the most touching was from his longtime musical partner and childhood friend, Greg "DJ Abilities" Keltgen. "Mike was the closest friend I ever had," he said. "He was as caring as he was brilliant and was a true prodigy. I am honored to have been in his life and to have created with him and help spread his messages. He was a great human being and he will be missed."
Another Minneapolis rap fixture, friend and collaborator Sean "Slug" Daley of Atmosphere, said Larsen was one of his inspirations. "My friend, my brother. I do not know who I would be without your influence in my life," he said. "You challenged me without tearing me down. You pushed and encouraged me to be a better person. You had my back even when I didn't have my own back. Your words, thoughts, and ideas impacted me in ways that I probably haven't fully realized yet. You made me laugh and cry. You made me look and question. Thank you for everything. I love you Mikey."
Fellow Rhymesayers rapper Brother Ali called Larsen a "precious soul," adding, "We're better artists for working with him and better people for knowing him. He added so generously to our lives and his passing leaves an empty space in our hearts. His spirit will forever be entwined in our life changing moments. Thank you, Mikey for sharing your light with us. We love you so very much and your music, insight and laughter will never leave us."

Lindsay Lohan dodged a major bullet this morning when Judge Elden Fox ordered her back to rehab until at least January 3, but spared her more jail time.
The troubled star is due back in court February 25, and will be subject to random drug testing in between her release from rehab until that court date.
If Lindsay does not test positive for drugs or alcohol, her sentence will be converted to unsupervised probation. So if she stays clean, problem solved.
THAT WAS CLOSE: Lindsay Lohan is headed back to Betty Ford, not jail.
The D.A., fed up with Lindsay's baloney, recommended she get 180 days in county jail. The judge could have sentenced her to a year if he deemed it necessary.
However, Fox was sympathetic to Lohan, but at the same time stern. "You are an addict. I hope you understand that," he said. Lindsay nodded in agreement.
"I don't want another train wreck," Fox warned. Asked if she was unclear on the matter, Linds tearfully responded, "No, your honor. I understand. Thank you."
So now the question becomes: Can Lindsay Lohan stay clean?

Justin Bieber did not assault anyone, nor was the singer referred to as a homophobic slur.
So states Michael Kwen, a friend of Justin's who actually played laser tag with him last weekend and spoke to E! News about the rumors circulating around the Internet regarding an alleged incident between Bieber and a 12-year old in Canada.
Here's what actually went down:
Kwen says Bieber and the boy in question completed their laser tag contest and exited the game's maze. The boy went to his father and Justin approached Kwen.
"He told me that he accidentally hit the kid while trying to escape by running through him and his friends," Kwen said.
There was no punching involved and no one used the word "faggot," as reports have indicated. But one item does appear to be valid: The boy's father's went off.
"He was yelling, like he was a lawyer...saying that Justin Bieber assaulted his kid," Kwen said of the scene. "[But] it was just a normal game of laser tag, people will always bump into you."
Sources say this money-hungry adult will pursue charges against Bieber, likely hoping for a quick settlement and payday.
Overall, Kwen concluded: "Nothing actually happened... it's funny how the story always changes. First it was a slap, then it was a punch and now there's homophobic slurs. None of that actually happened at all."
Good. Now we can simply return to reporting on Bieber's music and his hair and his dashing looks and his dedicated fan base...

TJ Lavin, host of MTV's "The Challenge," got some televised well-wishes from several members of the cast. During Wednesday night's episode, Cara Maria Sorbello, Abram Boise, Chet Cannon, Derek Chavez and Jenn Grijalva stood together to send their love to Lavin, who is recovering from an injury he suffered during a BMX bike competition last week.
"T.J., you're always pushing us to our limits, encouraging us to hang in there, and now we want you to do the same," Boise said as his castmates stood by his side. Derek added, "And now we want you to do the same."
Sorbello wanted Lavin to know that "if there's anyone who's not a quitter, it's you." Cannon concluded the clip, saying, "Hang in there, get well, and we'll see you soon."
The sentiments mirrored those MTV News has already heard from many of the other "Challenge" castmates
"Basically, I would never come back to a 'Challenge' unless TJ was there," said Kenny Santucci, who started out on the "Fresh Meat" season and hosts the "Jersey Shore" aftershow. "I hope [he has] a quick recovery, and I give him my best and my family gives him our best, because him and I got really close over the last couple of years, and he's been a good friend to me. I wish him a quick recovery and all the best."
On Wednesday, pal Chas Aday said he expected Lavin to make a "full recovery."
"Everybody's been really strong and positive, and they just all want to see him get better. His mom's held up awesome. His fiancée's held up awesome," he said. "It's just everybody being really strong and supportive. All his sponsors, MTV, just everybody ... it's been great. He's getting a ton of support. It's just been amazing. We're just thankful that there's that many people pulling for him."

Alicia Keys has proven to be as selfless in real life as she is in song.
The singer held her 8th annual Keep a Child Alive Black Ball event in New York on Thursday night. The fundraiser brought out Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Usher, Jay Sean, Janelle Monae, Jennifer Hudson, Whitney Houston and more.
Jay-Z and Keys' husband, Swizz Beatz, performed "On to the Next One," and Jay later performed "Empire State of Mind." Monae also hit the stage, as did Keys and Sade, who performed a duet, "Love Is Stronger Than Pride."
"It's my heart and soul," Keys told MTV News about the organization she co-founded. "Since the beginning, we've been very driven to do incredible work. I'm proud to show what four to five women who are very dedicated can do."
The organization benefits children and families who have been affected by AIDS but can't afford to purchase medicine; the event reportedly helped raise $2.4 million.
This year, Keep a Child Alive introduced the "Buy Life" T-shirt. The shirt features a large barcode on the garment; donors can buy the shirt and scan the code with their smart phones to make a donation to the charity. Every time the code is scanned by a phone, a donation goes through. Ryan Seacrest, Kim Kardashian and Katie Holmes are among the celebrity spokespeople appearing in ads for the shirt.
"It's like a dream to me to be among these people singing and performing, and opening people's eyes to what Keep a Child Alive can do," Keys said.

LOS ANGELES — Judging by the way Kanye West has presented "Runaway" — first at screenings in Paris and London earlier this month, then in Los Angeles on Monday night, to be followed by other screenings in Chicago and New York before Saturday's premiere on MTV — the 35-minute film seems to be a true labor of love for the rapper.
On Monday, West continued the warm fuzzy vibe he started across the pond. Before the movie began, he thanked the audience — composed mainly of West's friends, fellow artists (celebs spotted: Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson, Ryan Phillippe) and industry insiders — and then introduced the film. West explained that "Runaway" is an initiative through which he can fully showcase all the songs on his upcoming album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and his new creative process.
"I feel like I've found my creative sweet spot, to think like a 5-year-old at all times," West said, and cited childhood idols Jim Henson and George Lucas as sources for inspiration. "Make a decision like if I was 5, what would I like? What would I like before I was taught what to like? So without further ado, this is 'Runaway.' "
The film revolves around West crashing into a phoenix (a mythological bird played by Selita Ebanks), whom he carries away from the flames to nurse back to health and then teach the ways of our world. Songs featured in the film include "Monster," "Power," "Keep Calling," "All of the Lights," "Devil in a New Dress," "Lost in the World" and, of course, "Runaway." The L.A. audience was particularly excited about the "All of the Lights" and "Lost in the World" segments. But "Runaway" — which features ballet dancers in choreography similar to his "SNL" performance — received the biggest applause.
After the screening, West returned to the mic to thank the attendees for coming to see "his vision" and further explain his motivations for making the film.
"I was talking to Rihanna last night as we were working on the album, saying that we're blue blood and our ideas turn red when they hit the air," West said. "To be in a position to have your ideas turn red is so amazing. To get these different ideas out."
West brought up an art vs. music comparison. "They say people who are the best artists get paid the most, and those who are the worst get paid the least. In music, people who are the best artists get paid the least, and the people who are the worst get paid the most, so ... I just want to use my position," he said.
'Ye's talk touched on his hiatus from music, his move to Rome and his design internship at Fendi. Then he revealed a few juicy details about his star-studded track "All the Lights."
" 'All the Lights' has John Legend, The-Dream, Ryan Leslie, Tony Williams, Charlie Wilson, Elly Jackson, Alicia Keys, Fergie, Kid Cudi, Rihanna and Elton John on the same song," he revealed. "Some are things where I took Alicia Keys and I panned her a hard left, and then took Elly Jackson and panned a hard right because I like the way their voices sound together. Or it's Elton on the piano, Kid Cudi doing the chorus and it sounds completely seamless and completely ghetto at the same time," he laughed. "That's what I got from the year I took off," he said, reverting back to his earlier comment about connecting with his inner 5-year-old.
At the end of his speech, West touched briefly on his mother's death and how he isn't scared of anything because he feels as though everything has been taken away from him. "I have no mother, no grandmothers, no girlfriend, no daughter, and I lived with a woman my whole life," he said. "I feel like a soldier for culture. I have to fight for those who don't have that."
Kanye West's "Runaway" will premiere on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET on MTV, MTV2 and BET, and will also stream live on MTV.com, BET.com and VH1.com, followed by a live Q&A session on MTV.
