Katy Perry Sets Off 'Firework' For EMA 2010

Newlywed delivers fiery performance for show, which airs Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on MTV2.

In her first awards-show performance as a married woman, Katy Perry showed the world that she's got as much spark as ever.

Perry performed for fans at downtown Madrid's Puerta de Alcala, a venue set up outside the 2010 MTV Europe Music Awards main stage at Caja Magica. Under the shadow of a grand plaza similar to the climactic scene in Perry's latest visual, "Firework," the singer took the stage in a clingy, glittery jumpsuit bedazzled with a spray of shimmery red and white beads, her raven ponytail spilling out of a headpiece.

Several dancers in red shirts and dark suits busted moves as the singer belted the newly released jam. In keeping with the "Firework" theme, the set was heavy on the theatrical firepower, with dancers grooving behind the singer with hand-held devices spitting out sparks. Perry wrapped up the performance with some powerhouse belting that coincided with the raging plumes of pyro that engulfed the stage.

The fiery energy of the set underscored the empowering message of the song. Perry, who pegs "Firework" as her favorite Teenage Dream track, recently told MTV News she worked hard on crafting a song that would be uplifting without being corny.

"People are coming back and almost adopting it as their own anthem, and it's hard, I think, to write an anthem that's not cheesy," she explained. "I hope that this could be something in that category. I hope this could be one of those things where it's like, 'Yeah, I want to put my fist up and feel proud and feel strong.' "

The 2010 EMA show airs on MTV2 on Sunday (November 7) at 9 p.m. ET, and an edited, performance-heavy version will be broadcast Friday at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.

Drake Reveals Lil Wayne's Vegas Cameo Surprised Him

'Everybody around me was just playin' me, including Wayne,' MC admits.

When Lil Wayne appeared onstage with Drake in Las Vegas Saturday night, fans roared with surprise. Perhaps no one was more surprised, though, than Drizzy Drake himself.

"Everybody around me was just playin' me, including Wayne," Drake told MTV News in an exclusive post-show interview. "I talked to him on the phone and he was like, 'I'll see you in Miami. I got my party. I hope you make it.' So I hit 'Tez who manages me and Wayne and I said, 'You're not coming to the last show?' And he was like, 'No man, can't make it.' That's how I hit the stage tonight. I got no surprises for these people. They all think Wayne is coming and he's not coming."

During his show, Drake even asked the Vegas crowd to fill in the words for Wayne's verse in "Right Above It." But the fans were not to be denied the surprise appearance they came to see.

"After the hook of 'Miss Me,' " Drake said, "I heard ... Wayne's verse. I didn't quite know what was going on. I looked back and there's the man. I jumped higher than I've ever jumped in my entire life."

Naturally, the sold-out crowed roared with approval for the rest of the track.

Weezy spoke to the crowd from the stage after finishing his performance. "I'm fresh home from my vacation and ain't nothing, nothing, nothing like home!" He asked the crowd to make some noise for Drake and then exited, stage left, to more applause. After a brief backstage celebration with other members of the Young Money / Cash Money camp, Wayne left the venue. He is next expected to appear at a homecoming party in Miami Sunday night.

What Should Chelsea Handler's New Sitcom Be About?

What Should Chelsea Handler's New Sitcom Be About?

Is there anything Chelsea Handler isn't doing this year? Not only is the late-night comedienne appearing in two feature films and launching a spin-off of her E! hit Chelsea Lately, but she's now developing a new comedy for NBC. According to Deadline, the half-hour show -- named for Handler's bestseller Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea -- will be based on the personal anecdotes in Handler's three books. Actually, make that 'loosely based' -- according to the article, "the comedy will be centered on a twentysomething woman named Chelsea who won't have the same profession as comedian/author Handler but will carry a lot of the traits in her character."

So -- if the sitcom version of Chelsea isn't going to be a comedian, what should her new career be? We looked at some past NBC comedies and came up with four suggestions:

1. Bartender. Like Sam and Diane on Cheers, Chelsea could serve drinks and wisecracks to a gang of lovable Boston regulars. Of course, there's always a chance she'd get fired for drinking all the vodka.

2. Lawyer. If young Chelsea Handler was ambitious, she could take on wacky court cases like the cast of Night Court. In fact, with her eye for men and shameless sense of humor, she'd basically be a female John Larroquette.

3. Radio personality. Both NewsRadio and Frasier got lots of laughs from radio-centric comedy, and the joke never got old. How about giving Chelsea a relationship-advice show? We already feel sorry for the folks who call in...

4. Office assistant. Everybody has to start out on the bottom, and we bet fetching coffee for flaky bosses -- like David Spade in Just Shoot Me -- would bring out Chelsea's best zingers.

Would you watch a comedy based on Chelsea Handler's life? Chime in below!

Kings Of Leon Face Off Against Lady Gaga, Ozzy At EMA

'I think our chances are slim to more than slim,' KOL frontman Caleb Followill jokes to MTV News about winning awards.
By James Montgomery

Kings Of Leon rehearse for the 2010 EMAs
Photo: MTV News

MADRID -- The Kings Of Leon rode Southern swagger (and some seriously tight trousers) to success in Europe long before fans in the States were singing along to anthems like "Use Somebody." So you'd think they'd be plenty confident heading in to Sunday night's (November 7) 2010 MTV Europe Music Awards, where they're performing and are up for two awards: Best Live Act and Best Song.

But, you'd be wrong. See, in both categories, the Kings find themselves up against juggernauts like Lady Gaga, Muse, Linkin Park and, uh, Ozzy Osbourne, which means that, honestly, they're pretty much expecting to go home empty-handed.

"I think our chances are slim to more than slim," KOL frontman Caleb Followill laughed.

"And slim just left," drummer (and brother) Nathan added. "So we're not going to win at all."

"I think Muse and Lady Gaga will beat us," bassist (and other brother) Jared smiled. "Actually, they told us that."

See, it's true: All famous people do talk to each other. And if you're thinking that the Followills are just displaying the same modesty that fellow EMA nominees 30 Seconds To Mars demonstrated when MTV News asked them about their chances of taking home an award, well, you'd be right, to some degree. A moment later, Caleb Followill -- showcasing the swagger that made KOL international sensations and which they showed off during a Saturday rehearsal of their hit "Radioactive" -- looked at his brothers, cracked a wry smile and let his true feelings be known.

"We usually hold out for the Grammys," he smirked. "Nah, I'm just playing."

Will you be rooting for KOL to win at the EMAs? Tell us in the comments!

The 2010 EMAs will air on MTV2 on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET, and an edited, performance-heavy version will be broadcast Friday, November 12, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.

Lady Gaga, Beyonce Among Forbes' 100 Most Powerful Women

First lady Michelle Obama takes top spot on list, which also includes Oprah and Sarah Palin.

Lady Gaga has notched another milestone on her road to global pop-culture domination. The 24-year-old singer was recently named one of Forbes magazine's World's 100 Most Powerful Women list alongside CEOs, heads of state and media phenoms like herself.

Gaga took the #7 slot on the list, which was unveiled Wednesday (October 6), behind women such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and first lady Michelle Obama, who was named the most powerful woman on the planet (and is the first African-American to top the list). Gaga was the second-most powerful entertainer in the rankings, coming in behind Oprah, who clocked in at #3.

Other powerful ladies include Gaga's "Telephone" collaborator Beyoncé (#9), talk-show host and former "American Idol" judge Ellen DeGeneres (#10), author and former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (#16) and screen siren and activist Angelina Jolie (#21). Gaga is no novice when it comes to Forbes shout-outs. In June, she debuted at #4 on the magazine's 2010 Celebrity Power List, due to her cash-magnet Monster Ball Tour, $62 million in earnings, Web popularity and deals with companies such as Polaroid and MAC. B was bumped two spots to #2 after raking in $86 million from her world tour, arsenal of endorsement deals and House of Deréon products. Oprah has been a Forbes mainstay, coming in at #1 this year on the Celebrity Power List after ceding the crown to Angelina Jolie the year before. The mogul snatched the top spot back with a nine-figure payday and media conglomerate that includes TV shows, magazines and more.

Perhaps Gaga will wield her hefty worldwide clout to push for her causes. A longtime gay-rights supporter, the entertainer has most recently waged a campaign for the repeal of the U.S. Armed Forces' polarizing "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

What do you think of Gaga making the Forbes list? Sound off in the comments!

Lady Gaga's Meat Dress Remade By NYC Steakhouse

Restaurant is asking a beefy $100,000 for its version of Gaga's VMA outfit.
By James Montgomery

You would have thought that, by now, coverage of Lady Gaga's VMA meat dress had reached its expiration date ... sort of like the 50 pounds of steak that designer Franc Fernandez originally used to make the garment.

But, you'd be wrong. You see, with Halloween right around the corner, one New York City eatery is making headlines with their last-minute costume suggestion: A re-creation of Gaga's VMA garb, in all its sirloin-y splendor. The only catch? You've got to have deep pockets to afford it.

Yes, for only $100,000, the owners of New York's Old Homestead Steakhouse — appropriately located, as the Daily News points out, in the Big Apple's Meatpacking District — will make you your very own meat dress, complete with rib-eye leggings, Kobe beef boots and a necklace made of marrow bones.

The dress weighs a hefty 85 pounds and was created by Old Homestead owner Marc Sherry in response to Gaga's VMA outfit, which he deemed "very tacky" since it was made out of meager bits of meat. The restaurant's version, he points out, features only USDA Prime cuts of beef.

"I wanted it not to be a cheap skirt steak," he told the Daily News. "I wanted it to be a cut above."

And while the $100,000 price tag may seem a bit stiff, it does come with a designer goody bag filled with filet mignon, chocolate sauce, Kobe burgers and candy corn. Plus, as Sherry pointed out, there are added bonuses to wearing 85 pounds of beef.

"Wear it for an hour, have fun with it," he suggested. "Then you might have enough meat for six months for your freezer ... so that the $100,000 is not that expensive."

And, much like Gaga's meat dress, early reviews of the Old Homestead gown were also mixed: Mery Lopez, a waitress at the 142-year-old steakhouse who modeled the getup for the Daily News, described it as "heavy and greasy and gross," adding, "it is what it is — but I like it."

'Spider-Man' Musical May Miss Opening Preview Date

Concerns over stunt safety could block show's November 14 performance.
By Kyle Anderson

Spider-Man
Photo: Sony

Some musical projects are just cursed. Guns N' Roses' Chinese Democracy. The Beach Boys' Smile. And now the beleaguered Broadway musical "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" — with music by Bono and the Edge of U2 — seems like the next candidate for that list. The latest setback: It will likely miss its first preview performance on November 14 because of concerns raised by the New York State Department of Labor.

According to the New York Times, inspectors from the DOL visited the production on Wednesday (November 3) but were only shown a handful of the two dozen aerial stunts and maneuvers that are executed over the course of the show. One of those stunts — which launches an actor from the back of the stage and over the audience — has already injured two performers, one of whom broke both of his wrists after crashing onto the stage.

Because the DOL must approve all of the stunts before the show is allowed to be shown to the public, the inspectors will have to schedule another visit. That visit is not likely to occur by the show's first scheduled preview.

"We made it clear that we need to see every maneuver before they are legally allowed to hold their first performance," explained Department of Labor spokesman Leo Rosales. "This is a unique production, with an unprecedented amount of activity going on directly above audiences, so we want to see each one of those activities demonstrated."

"Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" has been something of a boondoggle from the start. Production has been shut down twice due to budget concerns, and an original launch date of February 2010 had to be scrapped when funds dried up. All told, the musical is said to have cost a cool $60 million — more than twice the previous record for the most expensive Broadway show ever produced.

Are you planning on seeing the "Spider-Man" musical? Let us know in the comments!

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I": Cafe Attack!

With their new movie's much-awaited release date of November 19th getting closer and closer, a brand new sneak peek video for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I" has just hit the web.

Titled "Cafe Attack," the latest offering gives fans a preview of a scene in the David Yates directed picture depicting Harry, Ron and Hermione fighting off two Death Eaters in disguise.

Meanwhile, the series' stars Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about their feelings over winding down their "Harry Potter" efforts, as Emma dished, "The three of us were just in pieces by the end. It was our lives played over on tape, and all these people that we?ve known, in this place where we?d spent more time than in our actual homes. It was overwhelming."

Continuing on, Radcliffe said, "I was sitting there thinking, ?What am I going to do without all these people that I love and who love me?? I will miss them all very, very much."

Michael Jackson LP Joins Kurt Cobain, Biggie Posthumous Releases

Material released after an artist's death often complicated by legal, economic issues.
By Kyle Anderson

Michael Jackson's <i>Michael</i>
Photo: Epic Records

When Michael Jackson died in June 2009, he left behind a lot of mysteries, many of which will be puzzled over for years and some that will never be resolved. But one of those questions — namely, "What music did Jackson leave behind?" — will be answered when Michael, a new collection of previously unheard songs, is released on December 14.

It will be the first of many releases from the superstar's estate, as Jackson apparently recorded "hundreds" of tracks before his death. (There are also apparently hundreds of never-before-heard Jackson 5 tracks as well).

Releasing posthumous albums can be extremely lucrative, but they are often weighed down by problematic legal issues. For example, Jimi Hendrix only released three albums before his untimely death in 1970, but there have been literally dozens of Hendrix-related releases since then. Hendrix died without a will, so the rights to unreleased tapes, demos and live performances (and there were many) were claimed by both Hendrix's surviving family members and his record label as well as various recording studios. (Those issues were compounded by the fact that there was infighting within Hendrix's family.)

If an artist has surviving bandmembers in addition to family, that introduces another complication. Kurt Cobain didn't leave behind a ton of unreleased material, but the live tracks and demos that were in the vault have sold quite well since his 1994 death (especially via the 2004 box set With the Lights Out). The road to getting that material released has been fraught with all sorts of arguments between Cobain widow Courtney Love and surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic.

But once legal issues are resolved, posthumous albums can continue to rack up big sales (and, perhaps more importantly, maintain an artist's profile long after his or her death). When Tupac Shakur was murdered in 1996, there were rumors that he had left behind hundreds of hours of vocals that he'd recorded out of paranoia — Shakur built up the massive back catalogue because he was absolutely certain he would be killed. As a result, Shakur has released more new albums since his death (eight, all but one of which have gone platinum) than he did while he was alive (five).

Tupac's situation brings up an important point about posthumous material, though. The main reason that artists tend not to release songs is generally because the material is subpar or not in line with the rest of their work. But once the artist has passed away and other people are called in to judge the quality, things can get problematic. Shakur's posthumous albums do contain excellent songs, though many of them are fleshed out with filler and afterthoughts. The same goes for former friend and rival the Notorious B.I.G., who did not leave behind nearly as much material as Tupac. Still, that hasn't stopped a pair of posthumous albums from hitting the street. Biggie was one of the best rappers of all time, but the material on 1999's Born Again and 2005's Duets: The Final Chapter doesn't do anything to extend his legacy.

The fact that the first of Jackson's left-behind material is coming out only 18 months after his death is a good sign for future releases, and the quality will be adjudicated just as soon as the first note starts streaming online Monday (November 8).

Considering the massive success of "Michael Jackson's This Is It" ($261 million in worldwide box-office receipts) and the rest of Jackson's catalogue since his death (9 million records moved in the first month after his death), it's likely we'll be seeing a lot more of these types of releases in the coming years.

Justin Bieber Says 3-D Movie Is 'Really Inspiring'

'You just got to remember that the sky's the limit,' he tells MTV News of 'Never Say Never.'
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kelly Marino

Justin Bieber
Photo: MTV News

With fans going crazy over the trailer for Justin Bieber's 3-D movie, it seems that he wants them to know one thing about the February release: It's meant to inspire them to do whatever it is they've always dreamed of. Good thing it's called "Never Say Never."

"I want to let people know there's a lot of people that are discouraging in life and that will tell you you can't do something, but you just got to remember that the sky's the limit," he told MTV News at an L.A.-area book signing over the weekend. "You're able to do whatever you set your mind to as long as you remember to keep God first and stay grounded. So I think the movie really explains that, and it's really inspiring."

The flick's director, Jon Chu, echoed that sentiment when he spoke with MTV News last month." "It's really an interesting sort of pass between his real life to his music, so I think in the trailer, we break it down every step of the way in his life. Everyone said, 'It's not possible,' " Chu said. "Every step, everyone's always said, 'No, no, no, no.' And he's always said, 'Yes, yes, yes.' And that sort of 'never say never' idea is conveyed in the trailer.

"That's sort of the power of our movie: to help inspire kids to follow their dreams, and anyone really, kid or adult," he added. "It's been sort of a family journey of fulfilling your destiny."

The trailer, which debuted last week, was filled with behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with some of the people important in Bieber's life, including mentor Usher and manager Scott "Scooter" Braun. Chu said that if Bieber's fans were tempted by what they saw in the trailer, they should love the film when it hits their local theater.

"We talked about the story of us sort of going back to his life and seeing a lot of archival footage and things that have never been seen that his mom shot when he was a kid," Chu said. "We don't have as much of that in the trailer, [and] the movie uses a lot, 'cause we're finding it really fascinating to see him grow. It's one of the very few generations that have been able to be shot when they were a kid to a teenager and see all the steps of his development."

Are you looking forward to Bieber's 3-D film? Let us know in the comments!

Usher's VMA-Nominated 'OMG' Inspired By '80s Sci-Fi Character

Director Anthony Mandler wanted to let R&B superstar take viewers 'on a journey, not a ride.'
By Jayson Rodriguez

For a video as forward-thinking as Usher's "OMG" -- with its laser beams and light flashes -- director Anthony Mandler actually looked back for inspiration.

"The original idea was kind of Max Headroom," Mandler told MTV News, citing the animated science-fiction character from '80s British TV. "That's where it came from — the TV flickering on and there's this character. We just wanted to bring it up to date."

"Max Headroom was always in his room," he continued, "this unidentifiable room, '80s shapes. I used that for inspiration."

The formula worked: "OMG" is among the Best Male Video nominees for the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. The clip is up against Drake's "Find Your Love," Jason Derülo's "In My Head," Eminem's "Not Afraid" and B.o.B's "Airplanes." Mandler is a multiple nominee, having also helmed Drake's video.

"OMG" is the first time Usher and Mandler — who has worked with Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige and Rihanna — collaborated on a project.

Usher said he knew the video would be a challenge and wanted to make sure the director was up to the task.

"When I first shot the song to him, I was like, 'Are you sure you're gonna be able to catch this one?' And he said, 'I got it,' " Usher explained.

"We wanted to bring Will.I.Am (the song's producer) into my world," he continued. "Obviously, the international sound and look and feel has already been set, but we wanted to do something theatrical, fun and energetic to show us working off of each other and playing off of each other as artists, but the cinematography would be artistic and incredible."

Mandler described the visuals as "Hitchcock-ian." Though the style of the shot was important to the director, he had a simpler goal in mind: to capture Usher in his element. He said the key to the clip was simply letting Usher's talent take over.

"The concept was to create a world where we put Usher in a space where he does what I think he does better than anyone else in the world, which is perform at a level and magnitude of a superstar and take us, the viewer, whether audible or visually, on a journey, not a ride," the director said. "And, in that, I wanted to create an unpredictability, so one set leads to another and another, and you never know what's gonna happen. Along the way, Usher becomes our guide. We're so focused on him, we don't notice the change. The thing is unfolding little by little, and you can't quite see far enough ahead to know what's gonna come next."

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through September 12.

LCD Soundsystem's 'Pow Pow' Video Premieres -- Watch It Here!

Anna Kendrick collects men in sultry, mysterious new clip directed by filmmaker David Ayer.

The new video from LCD Soundsystem featuring their song "Pow Pow" packs a visual punch — partly because of the sultry set and production design, but mostly because of a mysterious story line starring protagonist Anna Kendrick.

The clip, which premiered on MTV.com Thursday (November 4), opens with the words "at midnight, she came to collect the souls of men." Cut to the camera panning an elegantly organized array of accessories — earrings, bracelets, a bottle of eye drops, credit cards, contact-lens cases, makeup and so forth.

Kendrick is shown selecting a bracelet, placing it on her wrist and then magically walking through a wall before stepping into a convertible where a team of beefy bodyguards await.

The scene cuts to the interior of a fancy nightclub, where Kendrick's inexplicably powerful mystery lady wanders through the crowd looking surprised and delighted by her surroundings. She eventually finds a private cabana where a man and woman are sitting. The man, well-dressed in a fedora and suit, sees her and seems to know something is wrong. An older gentleman appears, presents the man with a paper to sign; he refuses. Kendrick then sits down next to him. As he inches away toward his date, she holds up her hand and releases a flash of magic!

In the next sequence, the mystery lady, along with the bodyguards, are back in the car, traveling to another location. The same drill is repeated at two other clubs, where two more men are "collected" and piled into the car.

All three men are dropped off at another location, where a judicial-looking man is ready to issue an edict of some sort. The three new recruits join a long line of collected men. Mystery lady enters, glowing and backlit and wearing a wedding gown — or so it seems — and smiles briefly at the men, until her smile turns to a menacing glare.

A quick cut to the opening shot of the elegantly organized accessories follows, only this time the camera pans over a set of brass knuckles and other ominous devices. Kendrick enters the frame once more, appearing in a different outfit, and we're led to believe she's embarking on another night of "collecting."

So ... everyone dies? Anna Kendrick is a collector of men's souls? We're going to have to think on this one a bit.

Martin Sheen In Talks To Play Uncle Ben In 'Spider-Man'

Reboot begins production next month and hits theaters in July 2012.

Breaking news regarding your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and Sony's highly anticipated reboot: Martin Sheen is in final negotiations to play Peter Parker's Uncle Ben.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the story, and a rep from Sony has confirmed the report to MTV News.

Those familiar with the comics know that Uncle Ben is an important part of the future web-slinger's life. He and his wife May take in Parker after his parents are killed and raise him as their own. Given Sheen's impressive résumé and reputation — he most recently delighted TV audiences for seven seasons with his lovable portrayal or President Jed Bartlett on "The West Wing" — Sheen seems a good fit for Uncle Ben.

Of course, if Marc Webb's reboot stays true to Spidey's history, Ben eventually meets an untimely end at the hands of a burglar. Naturally, no plot details have been revealed about the new "Spider-Man." But as far as casting, Andrew Garfield will play Peter Parker, Emma Stone will play Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans will play the Lizard.

Webb did admit previously that they're searching high and low for all the right actors to fill roles. "We're casting a wide net," he told MTV News. "That's really all I can say at this moment."

Other casting rumors include two actors allegedly up for the role of feisty Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson: "Mad Men" silver fox John Slattery and veteran actor Sam Elliott.

"Spider-Man" is set to begin production in December and will hit theaters in 3-D on July 3, 2012.

Michael Jackson 'Thriller' Movie In The Works

MJ choreographer and 'This Is It' director Kenny Ortega rumored to be helming the big-screen adaptation.

Just in time for Halloween comes a report that former Michael Jackson choreographer Kenny Ortega is in talks to direct a big-screen version of "Thriller," the late pop star's groundbreaking music video.

According to a report on Deadline Hollywood, GK Films, the production company from Academy Award-winning producer Graham King ("The Tourist," "The Rum Diary"), is in "active" negotiations to put together a deal to bring the landmark 1983 mini-movie to the big screen. "This Is It" and "High School Musical" director Ortega is attached to direct the $50 million project with a script from "The Hangover" screenwriter Jeremy Garelick.

The project hinges on an OK from the Jackson estate, and a spokesperson for the estate said no confirmation was currently available on the project; representatives for Garelick, Ortega and GK had not returned requests for comment at press time.

The original 14-minute clip was directed by veteran filmmaker John Landis ("Trading Places," "The Blues Brothers"), who is currently involved in a royalties dispute with the Jackson estate over proceeds from the best-selling video of all time. "Thriller" set a new high-water mark for the art of video-making at the time and is still widely considered to be among the greatest efforts ever in the medium, one that continues to influence generations of artists.

The latest to take a swing at "Thriller" is Kanye West, who has said his 35-minute art film "Runaway" drew inspiration from the video, including a nod to MJ in a scene featuring a giant papier-mâché likeness of the King of Pop.

No details were available about the plot, but Deadline reported that it might follow the ghouly song's "folklore" and possibly include a story line involving the late narrator of the song, film actor Vincent Price, and the town in which he grew up.

As noted on MTV's Movies Blog, a "Thriller" movie helmed by Ortega wouldn't be entirely surprising. Though Ortega has roots in music-based projects and is best known as a choreographer ("Dirty Dancing," "Newsies"), his directing credits include the Halloween-themed 1993 witch tale "Hocus Pocus," starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and a young Thora Birch.

What do you think of plans to make the "Thriller" video into a movie? Tell us in the comments!

At around 8:30 a.m. Thursday (November 4), Lil Wayne was released from prison — and it didn't take long for the MC to address his Twitter followers.

"#WelcomeHomeWeezy," he tweeted at noon. Then, at 3 p.m., the MC added "aaaaaaahhhhhhmmmmm baaaaakkkkkkkkkk."

Lil Wayne's Young Money camp is just as thrilled for their captain's return. Wayne's videographer, DJ Scoob Doo, who stopped by the MTV News offices Wednesday to chat about the MC, snapped a TwitPic of Lil Wayne Thursday. In the photo, Weezy F. Baby is seated at a desk with a laptop in front of him. As he focuses on the screen, he holds a lit cigar and a glass of something brown isn't far from reach.

Hours earlier, around 4 a.m., Young Money president Mack Maine tweeted that he was "impatiently waiting" for Wayne's release, and shortly before 10 a.m. manager Cortez Bryant wrote, "FREE AT LAST!!!!!!!"

Mack echoed Bryant moments later, writing, "Everybody go and welcome @liltunechi back.....all true weezy fans!!! The angels are rejoicing and so am I!!!!!"

Nicki Minaj also celebrated the news, writing, "Wayne's home!"

Wayne was released from Rikers Island prison after serving eight months of a year-long sentence for attempted gun possession. In March, he turned himself in to New York authorities after he struck a plea deal in his case stemming from a 2007 gun arrest near the Beacon Theatre in Manhattan.

Young Money President Mack Maine was a guest on MTV News' "RapFix Live" this week and and revealed that Weezy would celebrate his homecoming with a party Sunday at a Miami strip club called King of Diamonds. In addition, Mack echoed the statements of fellow Young Money affiliate Drake as to whether Lil Wayne would surprise fans during the final date of the Thank Me Later MC's Light Dreams and Nightmares Tour stop Saturday in Las Vegas.

"I would just advise you to book a ticket out there. If you can get tickets to that show on the 6th, I would strongly advise it," Drake told MTV News about the possibility of reuniting with his mentor onstage.
