What Should Chelsea Handler's New Sitcom Be About?

What Should Chelsea Handler's New Sitcom Be About?

Is there anything Chelsea Handler isn't doing this year? Not only is the late-night comedienne appearing in two feature films and launching a spin-off of her E! hit Chelsea Lately, but she's now developing a new comedy for NBC. According to Deadline, the half-hour show -- named for Handler's bestseller Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea -- will be based on the personal anecdotes in Handler's three books. Actually, make that 'loosely based' -- according to the article, "the comedy will be centered on a twentysomething woman named Chelsea who won't have the same profession as comedian/author Handler but will carry a lot of the traits in her character."

So -- if the sitcom version of Chelsea isn't going to be a comedian, what should her new career be? We looked at some past NBC comedies and came up with four suggestions:

1. Bartender. Like Sam and Diane on Cheers, Chelsea could serve drinks and wisecracks to a gang of lovable Boston regulars. Of course, there's always a chance she'd get fired for drinking all the vodka.

2. Lawyer. If young Chelsea Handler was ambitious, she could take on wacky court cases like the cast of Night Court. In fact, with her eye for men and shameless sense of humor, she'd basically be a female John Larroquette.

3. Radio personality. Both NewsRadio and Frasier got lots of laughs from radio-centric comedy, and the joke never got old. How about giving Chelsea a relationship-advice show? We already feel sorry for the folks who call in...

4. Office assistant. Everybody has to start out on the bottom, and we bet fetching coffee for flaky bosses -- like David Spade in Just Shoot Me -- would bring out Chelsea's best zingers.
