'Amazing Spider-Man' Sequel Release Set For May 2014

Sony is so confident in the success of next year's 'Amazing Spider-Man,' it's already announced the release date for 'Amazing Spider-Man 2.'

Consider it a mark of confidence on "The Amazing Spider-Man": Sony has already set the release date for its sequel.

The studio announced that "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" will be hitting theaters on May 2, 2014, to kick off that year's summer blockbuster season. So far, Sony is the only superhero-producing studio to plan that far ahead, as neither Marvel nor Warner Bros. has announced any of their upcoming comic book adaptations for three years down the road.

In March, "The Amazing Spider-Man" screenwriter James Vanderbilt was hired to pen the sequel. It seems as though Sony is impressed with the drafts he has brought in, considering they green-lit his second "Spider-Man" film 11 months before "The Amazing Spider-Man" hits theaters.

"I think it speaks volumes about our confidence in what we are seeing on the new film and our desire to move quickly on the next installment," a Sony executive told Deadline Hollywood.

The trailer for "The Amazing Spider-Man" premiered on July 20 to mixed responses. One part in particular that had fans doubtful was a scene at the end of the teaser where the camera switches to a first-person, Spidey Vision perspective. But despite the skepticism, Sony seems confident that their reboot of the "Spider-Man" franchise will premiere as a success.

At San Diego Comic-Con, director Marc Webb explained to MTV News that the effect was an attempt to play around with the "experimental process of 3-D." While the movie itself features a lot of realistic stunt work that wasn't accomplished with CG trickery, Webb also explained that he wanted the 3-D element of the movie to be an integral part of it.

"We shot and conceived of this film in 3-D," he said, "and I wanted there to be moments where you really feel and see the world through Spider-Man's eyes. I wanted to get that visceral feeling. In 3-D, I thought there was something about the experiential process, in a big theatrical environment, that was really special that I had seen. I was like, 'If I'm going to do a movie in 3-D, I want to give the audience that experience.' "

Jay-Z And Kanye West's Watch The Throne Will Last 'Forever'

'To do a beat on this album is definitely a dream come true,' Hit-Boy tells Mixtape Daily.

Behind the Beats: Hit-Boy
Kanye West has a multiplatinum collection of hit records, but for Watch the Throne, his collaborative album with Jay-Z, the Louis Vuitton Don has had no problem sharing production duties. One of the album's producers is relative newcomer Hit-Boy, who also happens to be signed to 'Ye's G.O.O.D. Music label.

Hit-Boy is no stranger to big records or high-powered pairings; he produced Lil Wayne and Eminem's 2010 single "Drop the World." Now, he looks to further extend his discography on "N---as in Paris" off WTT.

" 'N----as in Paris' came about from me having a beat idea already. When I went to New York, I just further went into it," Hit-Boy told Mixtape Daily. "It was just a batch of beats. Kanye asked me for some beats, and that was one of the beats I gave him."

The song appropriately was recorded in Paris during one of the many storied Watch the Throne globetrotting sessions. Hit-Boy, however, didn't get to make the trip, so instead he sent all the necessary files so Hov and Yeezy could complete the track. "They actually went over to Paris; I didn't get to make that trip," he said. "Next thing I know, they're like, 'Yo, I need all the files for that beat.'

"That particular beat was just energetic," Hit-Boy added. "It's something that can be played in the club, it's something that can be played on radio. It's a more of a fun type record. Just different flows, the way that they rode the beat, it's just new, it's fresh."

There is no doubt that Hit-Boy is accomplished after already having done beats for Mary J. Blige ("Stronger") and Chris Brown ("Froze"), but this particular placement means a lot more to him. "To do a beat on this album is definitely a dream come true," he said of his work with the Throne. "Just for me to work with them period, but this album is really just a staple. This is something that's gonna be forever."

Watch the Throne Week is on! Check in with MTV News every day until Wednesday for exclusive content surrounding the release of Jay-Z and Kanye West's eagerly anticipated LP.

Blink-182's 'Heart's All Gone': Back To Basics

Second song from band's upcoming Neighborhoods album is equally indebted to both classic Blink and iconic West Coast punk.
By James Montgomery

It's easy to compare Blink-182's brand-new "Heart's All Gone" with "Up All Night," the first song they released off their upcoming Neighborhoods album, mostly because the similarities begin and end right there. They are both songs by the band, and they are both on the new record.

Perhaps, then, it's best to contrast the two songs, because they're different in just about every conceivable way. "Up All Night" premiered with much fanfare — on the band's site and L.A. radio station KROQ — and was greeted with much the same. "Heart's All Gone," on the other hand, bowed without much notice: just a quick link on Mark Hoppus' Google Plus page that took you to a new website and a simple instruction to "Command the 'A' " (or, if you're on a PC, "CTRL + A").

Doing so on the new site, of course, revealed not only lyrics but the song itself. And that's when the differences between the two tracks really become apparent. Because while "Up All Night" synthesized all of the band's previous endeavors (Plus-44, Angels & Airwaves, Box Car Racer) into something entirely new, "Heart's All Gone" does the complete opposite: It is very much a blast from the past — both Blink's and the West Coast punk scene that birthed them.

With its breakneck guitars, yelped vocals and cascading drums, it sounds like something taken from Blink's 1997 Dude Ranch album (or '01's Take Off Your Pants and Jacket), but at the same time, it also recalls classic West Coast churn and burn, à la Bad Religion, Pennywise or even NOFX.

Then again, it also sort of sounds like "Stockholm Syndrome" from their self-titled 2003 album, and there's a rather dark instrumental break that seems like the spiritual sequel to "I Miss You" (or even "Adam's Song," from 2000's Enema of the State). Point being, it culls from the past ... and in doing so, it gives fans of so-called "classic Blink" (i.e., everything before they "got serious") hope. Unlike "Up All Night," it makes no bones about being a throwback.

Of course, given its differences to "Night," "Heart's All Gone" also raises a rather interesting question: Just what will the remainder of the Neighborhoods album sound like? Can a band made up of three men with such dissimilar tastes even make a cohesive album? Or is that really even the point? From the sound of things, the new Blink-182 may very well be adept at everything: booming hip-hop backbeats, big, widescreen choruses, spiky, saccharine guitars ... you name it, chances are it's gonna be on the album. Sort of only makes the anticipation that much greater, doesn't it?

Game Loyal To Jailed Manager Jimmy Henchman

'I wish him the best and I'm out here holding it down,' Game says of Henchman's recent arrest on drug-trafficking charges.

Game doesn't turn his back on his friends. The Compton rapper's manager, James "Jimmy Henchman" Rosemond, made headlines in June after he was arrested in New York and charged with heading a cocaine-trafficking ring. But Game told Sway during Wednesday's "RapFix Live" that he is still loyal.

"I talked to Jimmy, he was in good spirits," Game said of Henchman, who is currently locked up but has not been convicted of anything. "Well, the best spirits anybody could be in that position. I was actually surprised to hear him laugh and just be cool about it."

Henchman is part of Game's management team and helped the rapper get his start early on. For that support, the rapper is grateful and reserving judgment. "Until that situation unfolds, you never know what it is," he said. "I wish him the best and I'm out here holding it down. My loyalty lies with my band of brothers, which you're one of, and I'll never fake, never front, never turn on my friends."

The West Coast MC wouldn't go any further into detail, choosing to stay tight-lipped about his friend's legal drama. "It ain't for me to talk about, that's his situation and I'm just championing him and supporting him the best that I can."

When asked if Jimmy's incarceration would affect the release of Game's upcoming The R.E.D. Album, the rapper was confident that he would be fine, noting that Henchman was just one part of his management team and that the other members were equally effective. "With my team, with my management, every man is boss and we're all strong," Game said confidently. "If I quit rappin' today, my management team is fundamentally sound enough where they're gonna still be able to manage and market artists and still be able to put food on their table."

'Amazing Spider-Man' Villain A 'Mentor And Adversary'

Rhys Ifans' Curt Connors, a.k.a. the Lizard, has lost an arm just as Peter Parker has lost his parents, director Marc Webb tells MTV News.
By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

It's a familiar trend in superhero movies for the protagonist to feel a kinship with the villain. Just look at Batman and the Joker, or Professor Xavier and Magneto. But "The Amazing Spider-Man" director Marc Webb told MTV News that the concept will be taken to the next degree in his film.

Curt Connors, a.k.a. the Lizard, will be played by Rhys Ifans in the latest "Spider-Man" incarnation. Connors has lost his arm and, as Webb explained, "That desire to get that arm back corrupts him in some way." But the connection between him and leading man Peter Parker, played by Andrew Garfield, is that Parker is also looking for something that he's lost: his parents.

"Curt Connors is both a mentor and an adversary, and that's what I think is fascinating about that villain character," Webb told MTV News at San Diego Comic-Con. "That's what makes this story different."

Ifans echoed similar sentiments when MTV News caught up with him in San Diego, saying Connors doesn't see himself as a villain and "wants to save the world," so that element adds an additional layer to his character. But at the film's heart, Connors' relationship with Parker will keep audiences interested.

"In the same way as Peter is looking for his parents, Curt is looking to complete the circle in his life," Ifans explained. "They both dance to the tune of the same moral question."

Webb said "The Amazing Spider-Man" is definitely going to deal with Parker's missing parents, which is something the previous three "Spider-Man" movies didn't touch upon. There have been many different versions of that story line in the comics, including one where Parker's parents are actually CIA agents, but Webb said they would be telling their own story in "The Amazing Spider-Man."

"We're creating a world of our own devising, but we take cues from the comics," he explained. "In terms of the CIA agent thing, we aren't really going down that road in particular, not in this movie anyways, but there's a lot of stuff to explore and define and that was part of the fun of creating this universe in a new and different way."

Taylor Swift 'Beyond Excited' About VMA Nod

Singer tweets about nomination for 'Mean' in new Best Video With a Message category.
By Jocelyn Vena

Taylor Swift's glittering, empowering "Mean" video nabbed an MTV Video Music Award nod thanks to its feel-good theme. It's up for Best Video With a Message. This is the first time MTV is handing out a Moonman in this category, but given that over the past year more and more music videos have aimed to send fans positive messages, it feels like the right time to do it.

The video follows Swift as she makes her way from small-town performer to full-fledged superstar. Little vignettes also follow other characters as they go from being bullied to being empowered.

The nod seems to have Swift quite excited. She tweeted, "Wait, what?! The 'Mean' video got nominated for a VMA!! BEYOND excited. If you feel like voting ...... MTV.com." She followed the message with not one but three smiley faces.

Swift's video will face off against Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," Katy Perry's "Firework," Pink's "F---in' Perfect," Eminem featuring Rihanna's "Love the Way You Lie" and Rise Against's "Make It Stop (September's Children)." All the clips are being recognized for having a positive social message.

The new category spotlights the intersection of music and social activism, highlighting artists who've raised awareness of some of the most pressing issues facing today's youth, from bullying and LGBT discrimination to domestic violence and struggles with self-image.

MTV News spoke to "Mean" director Declan Whitebloom after the clip was released earlier this year. He explained that Swift wanted the video to mirror the song's message. "We all have similar stories in our life that hit similar emotional cues, and to open it up and make it broader about lots of people and situations ... makes it much more accessible," he said. "It means more in a general way. I think [the message] goes across the board."

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for your favorites in the general categories by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Lady Gaga And Bette Midler: A Real Mermaid Weighs In!

MTV News goes straight to the source to discuss recent pop-culture mermaid trends and beefs.
By Jocelyn Vena

Lady Gaga
Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images

Beyoncé declared her love for mermaids during her MTV special "The Year of 4," while Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Bette Midler have all dressed up like the mythical sea creatures onstage or in videos. Madonna has surrounded herself with mermen during a past tour, and mermaids also show up in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" and in several new novels, including a forthcoming book by "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer.

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park in Florida is famous for its mermaid shows, so MTV News decided to go right to the source and get a real-deal mermaid on the phone. It's no surprise that "mermaid" Carli Goodworth told us it's officially the Year of the Mermaid.

"It used to be really popular, like, 60 years ago and everybody was all about mermaids, and now today, it's coming back again," Goodworth told MTV News. "The stars are starting to use it, and the people from outside are loving it, and hopefully it'll draw more people to our attraction as well."

So why are pop stars taking on mermaid alter egos? Goodworth said the public persona of mermaids has shifted from the cute and cuddly Disney version to the more accurate version of mermaids who are mysterious, dangerous and sexy.

And the mermaid trend hasn't been free from controversy: There has already been beef between fans of Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, accusing the pop stars of lifting the idea, and then between Lady Gaga and Bette Midler, who did the mermaid-in-a-wheelchair routine decades before Gaga did.

"It's becoming so popular," Goodworth laughed about the mermaid beefs. "I think it's awesome. We're used to the few people around here, because we are known as the mermaid country, and it's neat to see all these other people battling it out to be the only mermaid. It's just different."

Being that Goodworth has performed as a mermaid for quite some time now, she's happy to see other people getting excited about it. "We love mermaids, so it's fun to see other people doing stuff with mermaids besides us," she said, adding her advice: "Be creative, do your own thing, really do your research."

What do you think about the pop-culture mermaid trend? Let us know in the comments!

Michael Jackson Estate Rakes In $310 Million To Date

Singer left behind more than $400 million in debt.

Between album sales, movie profits, licensing arrangements and lucrative deals for Cirque du Soleil shows, the estate of late King of Pop Michael Jackson has raked in more than $300 million since the singer's shocking death in June 2009.

According to TMZ, legal documents released on Thursday reveal that executors of MJ's estate have managed to make a major dent in the more than $400 million in debt that Jackson owed at the time of his death.

The first accounting from the executors shows that they have already spent around $159 million paying back various debts, income taxes and other expenses, which include providing support for the pop star's mother, Katherine Jackson, as well as his three young children.

"Although there remain unresolved creditor claims, pending litigation and additional challenging business, tax and legal issues, and the estate is not yet in a condition to be closed, the executors have made substantial progress in reducing the estate's debt," the documents state, according to a Reuters report. Two of Jackson's longtime confidants, attorney John Branca and music executive John McClain, were named as administrators in a will sign by the pop icon.

In addition to paying to make "substantial improvements" to the Jackson family's Havenhurst estate in Encino, California, the executors also spent an undetermined amount of money on "last illness and funeral and memorial service expenses." Those costs included a $900,000 payment to the Forest Lawn Memorial cemetery where Jackson is buried and $35,000 on expenses described as "costume for memorial."

TMZ reported that not only did the famously cash-strapped Jackson have more than $400 million in debt, but his estate also owed more than $40 million to concert promoter AEG tied to the scuttled This Is It Tour, for which MJ was rehearsing when he died unexpectedly. They've also paid $27.2 million in taxes and $4 million in mortgage payments on Jackson's properties.

Despite the solid sales of the Michael album and millions of units of the singer's back catalog being sold, as well as the box office of the "This Is It" movie and DVD sales, the estate is not nearly out of the woods. TMZ noted that the administrators have received more than 65 creditors' claims, some of which are subject to "extremely high" interest rates, and there are several outstanding lawsuits against the estate in several countries.

'Glee' Season Finale Exclusive: Listen To 'Yeah!' Here

An a cappella girl group covers Usher's hit for Nationals in next week's episode.
By Aly Semigran

Usher
Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images

During this week's episode of "Glee", the gang from New Directions took a big risk when they decided they would compete in Nationals by singing their own original songs. Well, the stakes just got a little higher.

MTV News has an exclusive first listen to one of the rival groups who will go up against the McKinley High glee club in New York City during next Tuesday's (May 24) big season two finale. In the upcoming episode, an all-female a cappella group sings Usher's 2004 club and radio smash "Yeah!," which may have the Nationals judges saying just that.

Singers replace synthesizers for the four-note melody that repeats throughout the song, and lead vocalists RaVaughn Brown and Missi Hale match the high energy that Usher, Lil Jon and Ludacris brought to the track.

Granted, a few things have been tweaked in the version for the tween-friendly show, including the length (the original is over four minutes long, while the "Glee" version comes in at three and a half minutes) and the tune's instructions to "Take that and rewind it back ... got the rhythm make ya booty go."

Also, instead of Ludacris' verse, "We want a lady in the street/ And a freak in the bed," one girl sings, "You know you want a kiss on the lips, old red." The line, "Ludacris fill cups like double D's" has also been cut from the song.

But, it's not all PG. At one point in the girls' rendition of the track, they page homage to Lil Jon's crunk hit "Get Low," singing, "From the windows to the walls" and even Mystikal's booty-happy single "Shake Ya Ass," when they urge, "Show me whatcha' workin' with."

At the 2005 Grammy Awards, the power trio of Usher, Lil Jon and Ludacris won the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "Yeah!" But, will the song bring the same sort of fortune to this girl group at Nationals? Or will the glory all belong to New Directions this time? Gleeks will still have to wait a few more days to find out.

The "Glee" season finale airs Tuesday at 9 p.m. on Fox, while "Glee": The Music, Volume 6, including the three new original songs "Light Up the World," "Pretending" and "As Long as You're There," will be available on Monday.

What do you think of this a cappella group's version of "Yeah!"? Let us know in the comments section below!

Coldplay, Led Zeppelin Album Covers Featured On New British Stamps

Album art from Pink Floyd, Blur and David Bowie also included.
By James Montgomery

Coldplay's new British stamps
Photo: Royal Mail

On Thursday (January 7), the U.K.'s Royal Mail unveiled a series of 10 new stamps, honoring the most iconic album covers of the past 40 years.

The albums featured in the new series are the Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed, Led Zeppelin's IV, David Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, The Clash's London Calling, New Order's Power, Corruption and Lies, Primal Scream's Screamadelica, Pink Floyd's The Division Bell, Blur's Parklife and — the most recent album on to make the cut — Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head.

Meant to honor "the most potent graphic images of modern times, many of which have provided a visual soundtrack to people's lives," the series is the end result of a lengthy research process by the Royal Mail, who looked through thousands of album covers by British artists before deciding on the final list. And, during a Wednesday night BBC Radio broadcast, it was revealed that the queen herself actually approved each design.

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page — who helped design the cover for IV — was on hand to celebrate the release of the stamps and recalled the mysterious nature of the album's iconic imagery.

"Almost 40 years after the album came out, nobody knows the old man who featured on the cover, nor the artist who painted him," he said. "That sort of sums up what we wanted to achieve with the album cover, which has remained both anonymous and enigmatic at the same time."

Of course, any great honor is befitting of an equally great contest, so, on the same day the stamps were made available to the general public, Coldplay decided to give one of their Rush of Blood stamps away. In a message on their official site, the band held a contest to send one lucky fan "a letter using a Coldplay stamp, postmarked with today's issue date."

"We visited our local post office earlier today and bought some of the Coldplay stamps," the message read. "Very nice they are too."

Lady Gaga: Straight, No Chaser

We observe Gaga in her natural habitat, with a good bottle of whiskey, in Bigger Than the Sound.
By James Montgomery

What is Lady Gaga's blood doing on the floor? We'll find out soon ...
Photo: James Montgomery/MTV News

Lady Gaga is sitting down, which is probably a good thing, considering she's wearing 6-inch heels and has spent roughly seven hours drinking whiskey with dudes who look like they were roadies for Bang Tango.

Drinking wasn't the only thing she did, of course. She also danced, vamped, sang, bled and underwent more costume changes than Evander Berry Wall — all over the span of one very long day on one very big soundstage in New York City. I'm not allowed to write about exactly what she was shooting (at least not yet), but suffice it to say, Gaga certainly deserved a few minutes of rest. Especially since she had spent the first part of the day filming a wearing an outfit that could only be described as "houndstooth overdrive."

And yet, throughout the day, as the top-secret shoot went on and on, I never heard her complain — not even close. At one point, during a performance setup, when the director asked if she'd be willing to film another take, she joked, "My voice can only last for another hour and a half ... the rest of me can go all night."

Everyone laughed, and not just because it was a funny line. There was an air of astonishment mixed in too. Simply put, no one seemed to believe that a star of this caliber would be this willing to work. And then work some more.

While it was certainly amazing to watch Gaga come to life when the camera was rolling, her work ethic isn't exactly breaking news. In a way, it was even more fascinating to observe her in the moments when it wasn't. Last year, I followed her every step at the Video Music Awards and discovered that, beneath the 35 pounds of Argentinean beef, she was actually a pretty normal person. That was only amplified Monday, on this soundstage in New York, in the rare moments she wasn't wowing everyone in attendance. Surrounded by her closest friends — all of whom were extras in the shoot, and some of whom came dressed in their Steel Panther finery — she was decidedly down-to-earth. Shockingly average, even.

She cracked jokes, held hands, poured drinks. She danced and cooed with her old friend Lady Starlight while "Heavy Metal Lover," a standout track on her Born This Way album, blared overhead. She whooped for joy whenever someone she hadn't seen in a while (and given her schedule, that was pretty much everybody) appeared on set. In fact, she seemed very much like every 25-year-old you'd meet, despite all evidence to the contrary.

Getting to be a fly on the wall is certainly one of the perks of this job; it allows you to see the mega-famous at their least guarded — for better or (as is sometimes the case) much worse. But it's the few instances I've been able to hover around Gaga's inner circle that remain the most revelatory, mostly because, as I wrote last year, her public persona is somewhere along the lines of "a pneumatic lion tamer with a penchant for creative haberdashery, or a fire-breathing neo-Shiva in sunglasses." To see her unwind with her pals, well, let's just say it's the kind of thing you don't forget, mostly because it's the most normal thing imaginable. Which, given pretty much everything you think you know about her, is downright unimaginable.

So while I can't tell you what I watched being filmed, I can tell you that Lady Gaga enjoys Jameson and has excellent comedic timing. And that told me more about her than any of her videos ever could. To a certain extent, we all think we know who Gaga is, even if that's not really the case. At ease, with a glass of strong booze, enveloped by her confidants — that's the girl few of us get to meet, which is a shame. She seems like a really fun person to hang out with.

What do you imagine Lady Gaga is like behind the scenes? Let us know in the comments!

Los Angeles

I'm here! I'm here! And I saw my first gang-banger get arrested yesterday so I feel like a total Angeleno.

I'm getting ready to go to the gym (again, like a total Angeleno!) so I will update later about my run-ins with Alexander Skarsgard, Pauly Shore, and Jeremy or Jason London (I'm not sure which one it was and seeing if I could force him to do drugs to find out seemed unfair. Besides, as it turned out, he was telling the truth?)

Anyhoo, I've got a lot to tell you about gardening! (Did you know if you get dirt wet it turns into mud? Yuck.)

And bumpers! (They don't bump off anything... they go, "Scraaaaaaaatch!")

And there's probably more but, again, I have to go because I have to get to the gym!

'Spider-Man' Director Defends Use Of 'Spidey Vision'

'I wanted there to be moments where you really feel and see the world through Spider-Man's eyes,' Marc Webb tells MTV News.

Behold, the glory of Spidey Vision! Perhaps that was the reaction "Amazing Spider-Man" director Marc Webb and his team were hoping fans would have when they peeped the final 30 seconds of the Marvel flick's first trailer, a first-person romp that puts viewers in the web-slinger's sight line as he swings from buildings and scales brick walls. But not everyone was sold on the inherent grandeur of this visual effect.

Maybe it was just a tad too reminiscent of mid-'90s first-person shooter video games like "Doom," the complaint went. Maybe Spidey Vision was neither revolutionary nor simply cool enough to warrant such lengthy and climactic placement in the trailer.

The whole thing left us wondering: just how much will Spidey's P.O.V. be a part of the finished film when it hits theaters next July? Not much at all, apparently.

"[There] are also moments we really wanted to embrace this experiential process of 3-D," Webb told us about Spidey Vision while at San Diego Comic-Con. "The teaser is a hint at some of that."

The great majority of the action, he promised, is grounded in realism and was accomplished not with CG trickery but down-and-dirty stunt performances. "We try very hard in the movie to make the stunt work grounded and real, and anything we could do live or practically, as they say, we did live or practically," Webb explained. "We built this huge rig on Riverside Drive in Harlem, a traveling rig of hundreds of feet, and we slung our Spider-Man over cars, through traffic in a real way, which hadn't been done before. That was really exciting."

So why even resort at all to a throwback effect like Spidey Vision? The better question might be, Why feature it so prominently in a trailer? But that's a separate matter. As Webb sees it, he wanted to capture, in three dimensions in the movie, what it really feels like for Peter Parker to propel himself through the cityscape. Hence the P.O.V. effect.

"We shot and conceived of this film in 3-D," he said, "and I wanted there to be moments where you really feel and see the world through Spider-Man's eyes. I wanted to get that visceral feeling. In 3-D, I thought there was something about the experiential process, in a big theatrical environment, that was really special that I had seen before. I was like, 'If I'm going to do a movie in 3-D, I want to give the audience that experience.' "

'Planet Of The Apes': The Reviews Are In!

Critics are impressed by reboot's special effects and lifelike apes.
By Terri Schwartz

James Franco in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes"
Photo: 20th Century Fox

In an age of Hollywood reboots, remakes and sequels, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" makes the rare move of being a movie in and of itself in spite of its well-known origins.

Critics have responded favorably to Rupert Wyatt's reboot of the "Planet of the Apes" franchise, and MTV's own Movies Blog heralds the flick as being this year's "Batman Begins." Wyatt's sharp directing and the tight script both earned credit from reviewers, but the aspect of "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" that had all the critics ready for more was the special-effects work done by WETA. Andy Serkis' Caesar was universally acknowledged as the best part of the movie, and for good reason from what we can tell. But don't let us tell you whether you'll love it or hate it. Check out our roundup of what the critics have to say and make the decision yourself in theaters this weekend.

The Characters
"None of the human plotlines rival Caesar's — not the perfunctory romantic teaming of Franco and Freida Pinto, nor the ongoing corporate chicanery at Gen-Sys, laying sequel groundwork. As tight as the parallel homo sapiens storylines are lax, Caesar's prison conversion to charismatic pan-ape revolutionist is near-silent filmmaking, with simple and precise images illustrating Caesar's General-like divining of personalities and his organization of a group from chaos to order. All of this is shown in absorbing, propulsive style, as Caesar broodingly bides his time like a king in disguise awaiting restoration." — Nick Pinkerton, The Village Voice

The Special Effects
"Even if you don't buy 'Rise' as a semiprofound social document, the utterly seductive integration of apes and men should slacken your jaw in amazement. We have reached that moment in movie history when the century-long chasm between live action and animation has been closed; 'Rise' is a seamless blend of the two. It marks a major advance over 'Avatar,' for it allows the motion-capture actors and the 'real' ones to interact in natural locations — in the wild, so to speak — beyond 'Avatar's' enclosed fantasyland of the planet Pandora. Technical innovation is sometimes yoked to leaden narratives, but Wyatt and his collaborators made sure to wed their visual strategies to potent themes. The result is a work of high, often thrilling popular art." — Richard Corliss, Time

The Morality
"Moral questions about genetic engineering are at the story's core. Caroline (Freida Pinto), a primatologist whom Franco falls for, is the voice of reason: 'I love chimpanzees,' she tells Will. 'I'm also afraid of them. It's appropriate to be afraid of them.' The bond between Will and Caesar heightens the chimp's growing unease about his own identity. When Will and Caroline take him out to a park on a leash, Caesar encounters a German shepherd similarly tethered. The two face off, and Caesar later signs to Will: 'Am I a pet?' Later, Caesar rushes to defend a befuddled Charles as he's bullied by a neighbor and winds up in a prison. Behind bars, Caesar resolves that apes must stage a revolution." — Claudia Puig, USA Today

The Legacy
"In the 1968 original 'Planet of the Apes' (based on the French novel by Pierre Boulle), Charlton Heston's character, an astronaut stranded on a future Earth run by warlike primates, began the movie as a sneering cynic and ended it as an anguished humanist. Being imprisoned and mistreated by animals taught Heston's Taylor the value of his manhood. Caesar, the super-intelligent chimp protagonist of 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' (Twentieth Century Fox), follows the reverse trajectory: He's an ape who reclaims his animal nature after being imprisoned and mistreated by men. Whereas the original was a work of speculative science fiction — a chin-stroking fable about evolution in the nuclear age — this revisiting of the 'Planet of the Apes' myth is an animal-rights manifesto disguised as a prison-break movie. And, unlike the murky 2001 Tim Burton reboot, this movie is a worthy claimant to the simian throne and the rare summer blockbuster that gets more, not less, fun as it goes along." — Dana Stevens, Slate.com

The Final Word
" 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' traces the roots of the venerable franchise back to a single resident of contemporary San Francisco, a supersmart simian named Caesar. In the process, the film, which Rupert Wyatt directed from an audacious screenplay by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, rises above its dramatic deficits, boosts the collective IQ of this summer's movies and swings into flights of kinetic fantasy that blow the collective mind. (If you think you've had it with special effects, wait till you see Caesar and his ape army battling our befuddled species on the Golden Gate Bridge.)" — Joe Morgenstern, The Wall Street Journal

Michael Jackson's Family Upset With James Durbin Over 'American Idol' Pepsi Quip

'We were shocked to see this,' read the Jacksons' message; Durbin tweeted an apology on Thursday.
By Gil Kaufman

Some people might argue that it's patently unfair to take rank amateurs, put them on the biggest show on TV and then expose them to potential worldwide ridicule every week. Because it's one thing to tune in to "American Idol" from your living room or play shows at the local wings joint, it's another thing entirely when you get up on that stage and open your mouth with tens of millions watching and listening.

James Durbin learned this lesson the hard way this week when he made what he thought was an innocent crack about not setting himself on fire during his pyro-tastic cover of Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)" on Wednesday night.

Asked by host Ryan Seacrest if he was worried about dancing around among the flames shooting up from the piano onstage, Durbin joked, "I have a lot of hairspray in my hair to keep it from jumping around — so much so, the one thing I was worried about was having a 'Pepsi moment.' "

The seemingly innocent crack was a reference to the 1984 on-set accident in which late pop icon Michael Jackson was badly burned during the shooting of a Pepsi commercial by some wayward pyro effects. The serious burns he suffered in the incident allegedly led to his longtime addiction to pain medication and prescription drugs.

The Jackson family was not amused by the quip and sent a statement to TMZ on Thursday.

"We were shocked to see this. It's nothing to make light of and everybody should be focusing on who was responsible for Michael's death," read the statement. Family patriarch Joseph Jackson also was reportedly miffed that "Idol" producers did not cut the comment from the West Coast feed of the show.

Durbin defended his slip-up in a tweet, which has since been scrubbed from the singer's official "Idol" Twitter feed, that explained, "For anyone talkin ... I said pepsi NOT MJ! I have no disrespect for Michael. I grew up singing his art. I guess youll take it how you want it." He later added, "Talkin about MJs passing is too soon. Making a reference to an incident 25 years ago..not too soon. The stab was at pepsi people."

It's worth noting that Pepsi's bitter rival, Coca-Cola, is the main "Idol" sponsor, a fact that Seacrest reminded Durbin of in an awkward moment after the comment on the show.

What did you think of James Durbin's "Pepsi" quip? Tell us in the comments.

Dimmu Borgir Release Live DVD; Plus Led Zeppelin, Brujeria, & More News That Rules, In Metal File

'It shows the intense live side of the band, as opposed to the perfection and the cleanness of how we sound on our albums,' guitarist says.
By Chris Harris

On October 14, Dimmu Borgir — who just happen to be Demi Lovato's favorite black-metal band — will release a a three-disc DVD/CD set called "The Invaluable Darkness," the band's first visual offering since 2002's "World Misanthropy." Boasting live footage shot last year, during gigs in Norway, Germany and England, "The Invaluable Darkness" demonstrates the unbridled furor of seeing Dimmu live, guitarist Silenoz said.

"It shows the honest rawness and atmospheric darkness of our concerts," the Norwegian told Metal File last week, after dismissing recent online rumors that his band's next LP would be coming out through Roadrunner Records. "Basically, it shows the intense live side of the band, as opposed to the perfection and the cleanness of how we sound on our albums. It's just a different side to the band, basically."

Dimmu Borgir began thinking about "The Invaluable Darkness" two years ago, but didn't start capturing footage until last summer, Silenoz explained, adding that the band will use its current stint on the Blackest of the Black Tour — which got underway Thursday night in Miami Beach, Florida, and also features the tour's founder, Danzig, along with Moonspell, Winds of Plague and Skeletonwitch — to promote the DVD. Dimmu Borgir will not, however, use the tour to write material for their next LP.

"It's our first time on Blackest, but Glenn [Danzig] had wanted to bring us out before [on the tour], but we weren't available until now," Silenoz said. "We've done Ozzfest before, but we're looking forward to this tour more. We did the main stage on Ozzfest, playing in f--_ing broad daylight. This tour will let us play in bigger places, but at the same time showcase more of what the band's about, visually. We are going to concentrate on the tour for now. Some years ago, we tried putting [material] together on the road, but once we got home, we listened back to it, and were like, 'What the f--- is this?' So, we just scrapped it all. We find it's so much better to totally focus on one thing at a time, and then, when that's over, you move on to the next [thing]. We don't really feel like we need to rush things, anyway, so we'll just take our time, and it's going to be what it's going to be."

Dimmu Borgir hope to reconvene in late December to begin writing the follow-up to 2007's diabolically titled In Sorte Diaboli. "We have some ideas floating around already, but we haven't arranged any material yet," he said. "We'll start doing that once the touring for this DVD is over." The band's frontman, Shagrath, is also due to marry soon — he's engaged to actor Nicolas Cage's ex-girlfriend, Christina Fulton, so that may have an effect on when Dimmu finish their next album, which Silenoz said could be out this coming spring.

"I'm sure [Shagrath] won't let anything get in the way [of] the band — I think, I hope," the guitarist said. "We don't need a Yoko [Ono] situation."

While Dimmu have been at it going on 15 years now, Silenoz said he doesn't think their forthcoming material will be much of a departure from their previous black-metal offerings.

"And we have always been about more than just that term, 'black metal,' " he said. "Luckily for us, the older you get, the less concerned you get with the categorization and putting labels on your music. Things start getting more and more limitless with us, and we know that we operate within certain frames. But we try not to analyze things too much, because it's just going to be working against you in the end. When we write new stuff, we don't think about what we should write — we just get together, and put material together, and if we like it, we keep it. That's the formula, if we even have a formula."

Dimmu Borgir are definitely getting older — guitarist Galder will be missing Blackest because of a recent addition to his family, and Susperia's Cyrus will be filling in for him; while former Vader drummer Dariusz Brzozowski takes over for Hellhammer, who had to leave the band in 2007 after sustaining a neck injury that's now limited the use of his right arm. As Dimmu has gotten on in years, Silenoz admits they have failed to keep pace with some of the more extreme black-metal acts that have followed in their wake.

"We helped open doors for the more extreme bands out there," Silenoz said. "I'm sure we helped open doors for bands like Watain, [insomuch as] people that had maybe started listening to us first then went on to the more extreme stuff. Let's face it — we're not as extreme as Watain and other bands like that, but we're fine with that."

The Blackest of the Black Tour continues through November 10 in San Francisco.

The rest of the week's metal news:

Dimmu's tourmates on Blackest, Winds of Plague, have announced ex-Azusa drummer Art Cruz has joined their ranks — he replaced Jeff Tenney. According to the band's blog, "Art has already added a new spark to the band and has provided us with a solid backbone that will allow us to continue our rampage stronger than ever." ...

What the world really needs is another Led Zeppelin box set, so, on November 4, Rhino Records will issue the Led Zeppelin Definitive Collection Mini LP Replica CD box set. For just $200, you'll get 1969's Led Zeppelin, 1969's Led Zeppelin II, 1970's Led Zeppelin III, 1971's Led Zeppelin IV, 1973's Houses of the Holy, 1975's Physical Graffiti, 1976's Presence, 1976's The Song Remains the Same, 1979's In Through the Out Door and 1982's Coda, as mini-LP replicas, with artwork from the original U.K. LP sleeves. Now, you know what you can get your dad for Christmas. ...

Former Killswitch Engage frontman Jesse Leach and current Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz have teamed up for a new project they're calling Times of Grace, and they've already started working on material for their debut album. According to Leach, "We have two songs to go and we will be finished with all of the vocals. Adam has taken lead vocals in three songs as of yet and he is doing a great job. We also worked on a track yesterday that is so epic — we trade vocals and do two different melodies at the same time. This album went from a melodic metal album to an epic mix of metal/rock/pop/shoegaze and punk. So all of your metal expectations will be incorrect — we are pushing genre boundaries." To quote "Meet the Parents," we'll look forward to that, Greg. ...

The Funeral Pyre and Early Graves will be hitting the road together next month, starting November 7 in South Lake Tahoe, California. Dates are booked through November 21 in Hollywood. ...

The latest incarnation of Brujeria, which features Carcass frontman Jeff Walker and Napalm Death's Shane Embury, have lined up several U.S. dates for this winter. The band will begin its brief trek November 28 in Denver, and wrap things up in Dallas on December 7. ... Demiricous will be touring with the Gates of Slumber starting November 9 in Denver, for a jaunt that's scheduled to run through December 6 in Indianapolis. ...

Nearly three years after Roadrunner Records' Roadrunner United concert, which took over the Nokia Theater in New York's Times Square, the label is now releasing footage from that special night as "Roadrunner United: The Concert." The DVD, which hits stores December 9, will boast two discs and 24 live tracks, including Life of Agony's "River Runs Red," King Diamond's "Abigail," Killswitch's "My Last Serenade," Type O Negative's "Black No. 1" and Sepultura's "Refuse/Resist." ...

According to Blabbermouth, Verrot, bassist for Swedish black-metal outfit Elimi, committed suicide on October 3. In a statement, the band said, "Verrot was a very good friend, brother, an excellent bass player/musician and an important part of Elimi; we respect his decision and hope he'll find his way with the dark gods of Chaos. Let your black flame be a part of what brings forth the day of wrath."

Bruno Mars Says VMA Win Would Be 'Coolest Thing Ever'

'The Lazy Song' clip is up against Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and LMFAO for Best Choreography.
By Jocelyn Vena

Bruno Mars' heartfelt clip for "Grenade" is up for three Moonmen at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards: Video of the Year, Best Male Video and Best Pop Video. He's obviously very excited by these three nods, but it's his fourth that really gets "The Lazy Song" singer going.

He can't wait to see if he can beat out Beyoncé ("Run the World (Girls)"), Britney Spears ("Till the World Ends"), Lady Gaga ("Judas") and LMFAO ("Party Rock Anthem") for Best Choreography for his track about just wanting to stay home and chill out.

"You know what I'm excited for? As much as I put blood, sweat and tears into 'Grenade,' I'm excited for 'The Lazy Song,' Best Choreography," he dished to MTV News. "That is amazing."

In the video, Bruno is captured hanging out at home, dancing around his living room and monkeying around with a few, well, monkeys. "I called up my friends the Poreotics [from 'America's Best Dance Crew'] and we shot this and choreographed this in one day," he recalled of the fun video. "And I think that would be the coolest thing ever if I went home and saw a Moonman that said: Best Choreography, Bruno Mars, 'The Lazy Song.' "

As silly and ironic as it seems for the singer to win the award for that track, he did put a lot of the same "blood, sweat and tears" into it as he did for "Grenade." "We worked really hard on it, and we wanted to give people something to laugh at and show personality in the song and what we're talking about," he said. " 'The Lazy Song' is not necessarily the song you want to hear in the club, but we put our monkey dance to it."

The 28th annual will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for your favorites in the general categories by visiting VMA.MTV.com.
